Board of Directors

Our Board of Directors believes that the purpose of corporate governance is to ensure that stockholder value is maximized in a manner consistent with the strategic plans for our company, legal requirements, the highest standards of integrity, and other standards. Our Board adheres to corporate governance practices which the Board and senior management believe promote this purpose and are sound. The Board is comprised of 7 voting members.

R. Gary Mesch | Chairman | MicroPhage, Inc.

Mr. R. Gary Mesch has been the Chairman of MicroPhage as of June 2007. Mr. Mesch comes to MicroPhage as the current managing director of Alpine Angels, a Vail Valley-based angel investment group that organizes financing for and advises start-up technology companies. Mr Mesch is also an active director of several start-up companies funded through Alpine Angels members. Mr. Mesch has been the founder and Managing Director of several successful data and telecom companies operating in the U.S. and Europe and has been instrumental in launching several other start-up enterprises. Mr. Mesch founded VersaTel telecom in 1995 in Amsterdam and served as CEO and then Chairman until 2002. VersaTel grew to become the second facilities based telecom operator throughout The Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany. In 2005 Versatel was purchased by Tele2 of Sweden and Apax Partners for $1.5 billion. Previous to VersaTel, Mr. Mesch as Managing Director of Open Skies, Inc., a telecom consulting company based in Amsterdam, advised European telecom operators on launching innovative services. From 1984 to 1990 he was co-founder of Nova-Net communications, Inc. a Denver-based nationwide data network provider that was sold to ICG, a Denver-based CLEC telecom company. Mr Mesch holds a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Colorado and an MBA from the University of Denver.

Don Mooney | President & Chief Executive Officer.

Mr. Mooney joined MicroPhage, Inc. as President and Chief Executive Officer in January 2011. Before joining MicroPhage, Mr. Mooney served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Proteogenix Inc., an infectious disease start up dealing in high risk pregnancy. Prior to Proteogenix, Mr. Mooney served as Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Focus Diagnostics, Inc., an infectious disease company with both laboratory services and global diagnostics products. Mr. Mooney helped engineer the acquisition of Focus by Quest Diagnostics in July 2006. Prior to joining Focus Diagnostics, he held positions as President of B&L Surgical Group, VP Commercial Operations Ortho Clinical Diagnostics, a J&J Company, and VP Marketing Operations at Ciba Corning/Chiron Diagnostics. Mr. Mooney has been responsible for the successful launch of many medical device platforms and brings experience in strategic planning and marketing from both medical device and diagnostic companies, and has an exceptional track record in full line functional responsibility, strategy innovation, integrating organizations, identifying and negotiating business alliances, and changing organizational culture to leverage market dynamics. Mr. Mooney is also serves on the Board of Directors of Novx Systems Inc., a venture-backed health sciences company that provides a complete powerful drug screening solution.

Larry Gold, Ph.D. | Director | Scientific Advisory Board Chairman

Dr. Gold is the founder and Chairman of SomaLogic, Inc of Boulder CO. He was also the founder of NeXagen, which later became NeXstar Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Dr. Gold was a director at NeXstar from its inception in 1991 and was Chairman of the Board from February 1993 until July 1999. He was Executive Vice President of Research and Development of NeXstar from March 1991 to February 1995. In February 1995, he was named Chief Scientific Officer of NeXstar. From January 1981 to June 1988, Dr. Gold served as Co-Director of Research for Synergen, Inc. Dr. Gold was also a founder of Synergen. Dr. Gold has been a professor at the University of Colorado at Boulder (CU) since 1970. From 1988 to 1992, he also served as Chairman of the Department of Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology where he received the CU Distinguished Lectureship Award. While maintaining his affiliation with CU, Dr. Gold now has only minimal responsibilities at the university. Dr. Gold received the National Institutes of Health Merit Award and the Career Development Award and was awarded the Chiron prize for Biotechnology in 1995. Dr. Gold has been a member of the National Academy of Sciences since 1995 and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences since 1993. Dr. Gold is also a member of MicroPhage's Scientific Advisory Board and Bacteriophage Advisory Board.

Rick Norling | Director

From 1997 until June 2009, Rick served as president and chief executive officer of Premier Inc, the largest healthcare alliance in the United States. Under his leadership, Premier was the recipient of the 2006 Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award and named one of 2008 and 2009’s Most Ethical Companies in the World by Ethisphere and Forbes Magazine. Prior to joining Premier, Mr. Norling was president and chief executive officer of Fairview Hospital and Healthcare System, headquartered in Minneapolis/St. Paul and serving the people of Minnesota through an integrated system of hospitals, clinics, and other service sites. As CEO of Fairview, Norling served as a member of the board of directors of American Healthcare Systems (AmHS). Working as a board committee member, he was instrumental in shaping the merger of AmHS with the former Premier Healthcare Alliance (PHA) and SunHealth Alliance to form today’s Premier Inc. Before joining Fairview, Mr. Norling was executive vice president and chief operating officer of Lutheran Hospital Society of Southern California, a not-for-profit system of hospitals and healthcare organizations headquartered in Burbank, Calif. Mr. Norling earlier was a Visiting International Fellow at the King’s Fund in London. He continues to participate in and provide presentations for international health care studies. Mr. Norling is a member of the Board of Trustees of Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian in Newport Beach, Calif. He is also a member of their Quality Improvement Committee.

Mel Schatz | Director

Mel Schatz has over 30 years in the healthcare arena managing worldwide businesses in the areas of medical devices and diagnostics. His diagnostic experience includes 10 years with Marion Scientific building its microbiology franchise. He subsequently was with Abbott Diagnostics for 15 years where he managed its Cancer Business Unit and also served as Vice President of its Asia Pacific Area and Chairman of its Dainabot joint venture in Japan. Mel is currently serving as President and CEO of Crux Biomedical, a privately funded vascular device firm, headquartered in Menlo Park, California. He holds a BS in Economics from the U. of Maryland and an MBA from Rockhurst College.

Mark Schwartz, MD, JD | Director

Dr. Schwartz received his undergraduate degree in 1983 from Cornell University, majoring in immunology and genetics. Thereafter, he obtained both his Medical Doctorate (University of Illinois College of Medicine, Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honorary Society, 1988) and Juris Doctorate (John Marshall Law School, magna cum laude, 1994) in Chicago, Illinois. Currently, Dr. Schwartz is a member of Alpine Angels, a Colorado-based private equity group, and is a practicing attorney with several offices nationwide. Dr. Schwartz serves on a number of boards and is a consultant and advisor to numerous start-up companies.

Lynn M. Taussig, MD | Director

Dr. Taussig previously retired as President/CEO of National Jewish Medical and Research Center, a position he held for nearly 12 ½ years. Currently, he is a Special Advisor to the Provost (for the Life Sciences) at the University of Denver. He serves as the chair of the Steering Committee for the National Institutes of Health's Childhood Asthma Research and Education (CARE) Network and also chairs Data Safety Monitoring Boards for two other NIH studies. Prior to assuming his position at National Jewish, he was Professor and Chair of the Department of Pediatrics, and Director, Steele Children's Research Center at the University of Arizona Health Sciences Center. He was on the faculty of the University of Arizona for 19 ½ years and began the Pediatric Pulmonary Section at that institution. In 1980, Dr. Taussig initiated the Tucson Children's Respiratory Study, a major longitudinal study of the risk factors for asthma; the study continues today. He is the author of more than 185 scientific publications and seven books and monographs. He is a recipient of numerous honors and awards including the Alumni Achievement Award from Washington University School of Medicine, the Distinguished Achievement Award from the American Thoracic Society, and the Kendig Award from the American Academy of Pediatrics and has lectured extensively around the world. Dr. Taussig was one of the founders of the Colorado BioScience Association and currently is an advisor to three early stage bioscience companies (excluding MicroPhage). In addition, he serves on the boards of a bank and the Caring for Colorado philanthropic foundation. Dr. Taussig is a graduate of Harvard University and Washington University School of Medicine.
